About Acupuncture by Shirley
As a fifth-generation acupuncturist, my work is rooted in a deep family tradition of healing that has been passed down with care, respect, and dedication. Growing up within this lineage has given me not only technical knowledge, but also a profound appreciation for the responsibility and privilege of supporting others on their path to wellbeing.
I gained my professional qualifications in Leamington Spa, UK, where I developed a strong foundation in Five Element Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Eager to deepen my understanding, I continued my studies at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the world’s leading institutions for Traditional Chinese Medicine. There, I immersed myself in both the classical teachings and modern clinical approaches to TCM.
Following my studies, I gained experience in fast paced clinics in Shanghai, with hands-on exposure to a wide range of conditions, and refining my skills under the guidance of experienced practitioners. This time allowed me to integrate traditional wisdom with contemporary practice, ensuring that each treatment I offer is both authentic and thoughtfully tailored to the individual.
My approach is gentle, attentive, and holistic. I believe true healing begins with listening — to your story, your symptoms, and your goals. Whether you are seeking relief from a specific condition or looking to restore balance in your life, I am here to support you with compassion, knowledge, and care.
It is an honour to continue my family’s healing tradition and to share it with you.

How Acupuncture works
Acupuncture is a time-tested therapy that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and restore balance. It involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile single-use needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points.
From a traditional perspective, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of energy (often called “Qi,” pronounced “chee”) through pathways in the body. When this flow is disrupted or unbalanced, it can lead to discomfort or illness. By stimulating precise points, acupuncture helps restore harmony, allowing the body to function more smoothly.
From a modern scientific viewpoint, acupuncture has been shown to influence the nervous system, improve blood circulation, and encourage the release of natural chemicals such as endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers). It can also help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation.
Many patients experience acupuncture as deeply calming. During treatment, the body shifts into a restorative state, which can support healing across a wide range of conditions – whether physical, emotional, or stress-related.
In simple terms, acupuncture doesn’t “force” the body to do anything, it works by activating your body’s own healing mechanisms, helping you feel more balanced, relaxed, and well.
